University of Jammu Organises “Chaitē̃ Dī Laṛī” Seminar and Scholarship Programme
Jammu, September 17, 2026: The Department of Dogri, University of Jammu, in collaboration with the Kunwar Viyogi Memorial Trust, organised a one-day seminar and scholarship distribution programme titled “Chaitē̃ Dī Laṛī” as part of the 11th Kunwar Viyogi Utsav 2026 at the Gyan Chand Seminar Hall, University of Jammu, today.
The programme was organised to commemorate the literary and cultural legacy of Kunwar Viyogi and to provide a platform for meaningful academic and literary discourse on Dogri language, literature and cultural heritage.
The programme commenced with a solemn tribute to Kunwar Viyogi and Shri Goverdhan Singh Jamwal Ji, who served as the Chairman of the Kunwar Viyogi Trust and remained actively involved in promoting its literary and cultural endeavours. Shri Goverdhan Singh Jamwal Ji passed away in the month of May. The gathering paid heartfelt homage to his memory and invaluable contributions by observing two minutes of silence as a mark of respect.
Ms. Devyani Rana, MLA, Nagrota Constituency, the Chief Guest of the inaugural session, addressed the gathering and emphasised the importance of preserving, promoting and enriching the mother tongue and the region’s cultural identity. She highlighted the need to connect the younger generation with its rich literary and cultural traditions and stressed that Dogri must also find expression through modern cultural genres and contemporary forms of cultural expression. She emphasised the importance of creating opportunities for students to engage with recent cultural forms in their mother tongue so that the language remains relevant, vibrant and connected with the aspirations and creative interests of the younger generation. She said that pride in one’s culture is the foundation of any society and that the legacy of Jammu can continue only if its youth remain connected to their roots.
Three scholarships were awarded to the academic toppers of the session 2023-25, i.e one male, topper Mr. Daleep Singh and one female topper Ms. Neeru Devi of M.A Dogri and Ms Jasmeen Kour topper from the English department received this scholarship.
Prof. Neelu Rohmetra, Dean Research Studies, University of Jammu, who presided over the function, emphasised the significance of academic and literary initiatives aimed at strengthening regional languages and their intellectual traditions. She reaffirmed that the University of Jammu under the visionary guidance of Vice Chancellor Prof Umesh Rai is committed to promoting and preserving Dogri and appreciated the sustained efforts of the Department of Dogri in furthering this commitment through its academic, literary and cultural activities.
Prof. Sucheta Pathania, Head, Department of Dogri, University of Jammu, welcomed the distinguished guests, speakers, faculty members, research scholars, students, writers and literary enthusiasts. She highlighted the significance of the programme in fostering greater engagement with the mother tongue and its literary traditions. She also underlined the rich legacy of the Department of Dogri in ensuring the continuity, development and progress of the language, noting its sustained contribution towards nurturing scholarship, literary engagement and cultural awareness. She also highlighted the literary contribution of Kunwer Viyogi towards Dogri literature, in particular the Dogri Sonnet.
The inaugural session featured a special address on the life, literary contributions and legacy of Kunwar Viyogi, followed by an academic session chaired by PadamShree Mohan Singh, comprising two research papers on Viyogi’s literary works, presented by Dr. Ashu Sharma and Dr. Ruchi Sharma. The students and scholars of the department -Mr. Ajay Singh, Mr. Nitish Kumar and Ms. Heena Choudhary also recited the Poems and sonnets of Kunwar Viygoi.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, research scholars, students, writers and literary enthusiasts.
The proceedings were ably conducted by Dr. Sandeep Dubey, Assistant Professor, Department of Dogri, University of Jammu, who efficiently anchored the event and seamlessly coordinated both the sessions and ceremonial segments.
Dr. Padam Dev Singh presented a detailed report highlighting the activities and contributions of the Kunwar Viyogi Trust. The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Radha Sharma, who expressed her gratitude to all the dignitaries, participants, and attendees for their valuable presence and contribution.
