JU Organises Panel Discussion on Drug Abuse Under Nasha Mukt Abhiyan

JAMMU, JUNE 3: The Law School, University of Jammu, in collaboration with the Community Service and Social Justice Club, organised a panel discussion-cum-interactive session under the aegis of the ongoing 100-Day Nasha Mukt Abhiyan of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, reaffirming its commitment to creating awareness among youth about the legal, social and enforcement dimensions of the drug menace.

The panel featured distinguished resource persons from premier law enforcement agencies. SSP, Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), Crime Branch Jammu, Mr. Anwar-ul-Haq, delivered an insightful address on the enforcement of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, investigation challenges, emerging trends in narcotics trafficking and the significance of intelligence-driven operations in dismantling drug networks. He also elaborated on the role of law enforcement agencies in curbing the supply chain of narcotic substances.

Assistant Director, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Jammu Circle, Mr. Harish Kumar highlighted the multifaceted role of the NCB in implementing national anti-drug policies, coordinating inter-agency efforts, promoting rehabilitation initiatives and strengthening prosecution mechanisms to ensure effective convictions in narcotics-related cases.

A lively interactive session followed, during which students engaged with the experts on issues relating to bail jurisprudence under the NDPS Act, preventive and awareness strategies, rehabilitation measures and career opportunities in anti-narcotics and law enforcement agencies. The discussion provided valuable practical insights into the legal and operational aspects of combating drug abuse and trafficking.

Earlier, Director, The Law School, Prof. Seema Rohmetra, in her welcome address, highlighted the crucial role of educational institutions in fostering a drug-free society and emphasized the responsibility of future legal professionals in addressing challenges posed by substance abuse and illicit trafficking.

A comprehensive presentation on the objectives, targets and implementation framework of the Nasha Mukt Abhiyan was delivered by Prof. Shashi Prabha, Coordinator, Community Service and Social Justice Club. She provided participants with an overview of the UT administration’s efforts to combat drug abuse through awareness, prevention, rehabilitation and enforcement measures.

The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks presented by Dr. Kartika Bakshi, Coordinator, who expressed gratitude to the distinguished speakers, faculty members and students for their active participation and contribution to the success of the event.

The event served as a meaningful platform for sensitising law students to the legal framework, enforcement mechanisms and societal challenges associated with drug abuse, while reinforcing the objectives of the 100-Day Nasha Mukt Abhiyan and promoting collective efforts towards a drug-free Jammu and Kashmir.
