University of Jammu to launch 100-Day Nasha Mukt Abhiyan
Highlights action plan to combat drug abuse among youth

Jammu, April 16: The University of Jammu today organised a press conference to apprise the media and the society at large about the forthcoming launch of the 100-day Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA), which will be formally inaugurated by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Umesh Rai, through a pledge ceremony on April 17, 2026 at the University campus. The programme is being organised in alignment with the vision of the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor and Chancellor, Shri Manoj Sinha, under whose leadership the 100-day campaign was launched across Jammu & Kashmir on April 11, 2026, calling for a united societal response to eliminate the drug menace, including a zero-tolerance approach towards drug trafficking alongside care and rehabilitation for those affected.
The press conference was addressed by Prof. Neelu Rohmetra, Dean Research Studies; Prof. J. P. Singh Joorel, Dean Academic Affairs; Prof. Prakash C. Anthal, Dean Students Welfare; and Dr. Neeraj Sharma, Registrar.
Addressing the media, Prof. Neelu Rohmetra, Dean Research Studies, emphasised that universities must go beyond academics to nurture responsible and resilient individuals. She noted that substance abuse poses a serious threat not only to individual well-being but also to the nation’s social and intellectual capital. She highlighted that the University, under the leadership of the esteemed Vice-Chancellor, remains committed to creating a supportive environment through sustained awareness, mentorship, and counselling. She further stressed that addiction cannot be seen as a response to life’s challenges, and that continuous engagement with students is essential to guide them towards positive and constructive choices.
Prof. J. P. Singh Joorel, Dean Academic Affairs, observed that youth, particularly those living away from home, are more vulnerable to substance abuse due to changing social environments. He underlined the need for a coordinated approach involving government enforcement, societal participation, and institutional responsibility.
Highlighting the University’s proactive efforts over the years, he noted that awareness initiatives must extend beyond the campus to reach communities, and called upon the media to play a constructive role in strengthening public awareness on this issue.
Prof. Prakash C. Anthal, Dean Students Welfare, highlighted that the campaign has now moved towards a more result-oriented and outreach-driven approach. He emphasised that the growing menace of drug abuse must be addressed with urgency and collective responsibility, as it deeply affects families, society, and the future of youth.
Referring to the vision articulated by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor and Chancellor, Shri Manoj Sinha, he stated that the fight against drug abuse must evolve into a mass movement, where society as a whole comes together to protect its youth. He further underscored that the Hon’ble Chancellor has called for a zero-tolerance approach towards drug trafficking, while also emphasising care, compassion, and rehabilitation for those affected by addiction.
He informed that the University has prepared a comprehensive 100-day action plan (April–June 2026), which will be implemented under the guidance of esteemed Vice-Chancellor. The plan includes a wide range of activities involving Teaching Departments, clubs, NSS/NCC units, and offsite campuses.
Elaborating on the plan, he stated that April will focus on awareness and mobilisation through pledge ceremonies, wellness programmes, marathons, debates, and police-community interactions. May will emphasise community outreach, including women-led initiatives, employee awareness programmes, and outreach activities in surrounding areas. June will focus on consolidation and sustainability, including anti-drug themed events, teacher training programmes, plantation drives, and integration of awareness into academic processes.
Dr. Neeraj Sharma, Registrar, reiterated the University’s commitment to ensuring effective administrative coordination for the successful implementation of the Nasha Mukt Abhiyan across its various departments and campuses.
