JU Organizes Legal Aid & Legal Literacy Camp in RS Pura

RS PURA, April 10, 2026 – In a significant step toward strengthening grassroots legal awareness and access to justice, The Law School, University of Jammu, in collaboration with the Lakrishna Foundation organized a comprehensive Legal Aid and Legal Literacy Camp at village Gagian in RS Pura. The initiative aimed to bridge the gap between legal institutions and rural populations, ensuring vital legal knowledge reaches those most in need. The program witnessed active participation from legal experts, academicians, and social activists, creating a vibrant platform for dialogue, awareness, and community engagement.
The camp was formally inaugurated by Prof. Seema Rohmetra, Director, The Law School, University of Jammu, alongside Dr. Monica Narang, Coordinator of the Legal Aid & Legal Literacy Committee, and faculty members. Advocate Aman Suresh Sharma delivered the welcome address on behalf of the Lakrishna Foundation. Resource persons for the sessions included Advocate Meenakshi Slathia, Deputy Advocate General, High Court of J&K and Ladakh & noted alumni of the institution, Advocate Sugandh Gandotra, Fellow, NLU Delhi, and Dr. Swati Sharma, Social Activist. They addressed critical legal and social issues affecting rural communities, including Consumer protection laws, Legal safeguards for women, Rights and welfare of senior citizens, Child rights, Prevention of drug abuse, and legal aid provisions for defense personnel. Experts emphasized that lack of awareness often deprives individuals of their rightful protections and benefits under the law.
A major highlight was the interactive Q&A session, where local residents freely shared concerns and sought legal guidance. Experts provided on-the-spot advice on filing complaints, accessing legal aid, and safeguarding rights. A household survey was also conducted to assess ground realities and identify prevalent issues requiring institutional intervention.
Speakers unanimously stressed the need for regular, sustained outreach programs in rural and semi-urban areas. Legal literacy, they said, is not merely about information dissemination but about enabling citizens to actively participate in democratic and judicial processes.
The role of the Lakrishna Foundation represented by its Founder Advocate Devraj Sharma was widely appreciated by speakers and participants. The Foundation is known for its consistent support to several social and community-centric initiatives, emerging as a key contributor to societal development.
The proceedings were smoothly coordinated by Dr. Nitan Sharma, Assistant Professor, The Law School. Other notable contributors included Captain Kundan Lal Sharma, Anil Sharma, Vinay Isher, Advocate Deepak Sharma, Adv. Richa Sharma, Adv. Kesar Parveen and Advocate Ranjit Singh Chib.
