University of Jammu Celebrates Poshan Maah with a Focus on Maternal and Child Health
The Department of Home Science, University of Jammu, organized a special program to celebrate Poshan Maah, with a dedicated focus on maternal and child health. The event was designed for the mothers of children enrolled in the Nursery School housed within the Department, in line with the national campaign to promote nutrition and well-being.
Welcoming the participants, Prof. Sarika Manhas, Head of the Department of Home Science, emphasized the relevance of Poshan Maah and highlighted the Department’s ongoing commitment to community outreach. She underscored that good nutrition for mothers and children is the cornerstone of a healthy society. Prof. Manhas further stressed that the Department is dedicated to creating a healthy future for all children by integrating research, teaching, and practical interventions that directly benefit families and communities.
The technical sessions were conducted by Ms. Raziya Farooq and Ms. Poorvi Verma, dieticians and nutrition experts, who stressed the importance of planning diets based on the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) to ensure balanced nutrition for both mothers and children. They also highlighted the growing concern of childhood obesity and advised simple lifestyle measures such as healthy eating habits, active play, and reduced consumption of processed foods.
The event was graced by senior faculty members of the Department—Prof. Rajni Dhingra, Prof. Neeru Sharma, and Prof. Samridhi Arora. Others who attended the occasion included the Nursery School teachers—Ms. Mamta Singh, Ms. Puja Saraf, and Ms. Seema Sharma—along with faculty members from other departments: Dr. Ankit Mahajan, Dr. Bandana Thakur, Dr. Sarabjeet Kour, Dr. Chinnmoye Maharana, and Dr. Sakshi Sharma.
The proceedings were efficiently conducted by research scholar Ms. Sonakshi Anand. The program concluded with an interactive session where mothers shared their experiences and received practical guidance from the experts.
The celebration of Poshan Maah by the Department of Home Science reaffirmed its role as a knowledge hub and its vision of building healthier families and a stronger nation by ensuring the well-being of mothers and children.
