Student-led “Parisar Safai Abhiyaan” marks ‘Sewa Parv 2025’ at JU
Jammu September 24: Green Campus Task Force (GCTF-JU) in collaboration with Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu organized one day “Parisar Safai Abhiyaan” in the University Campus to mark the celebrations of Sewa Parv under Swachhata Hi Sewa Campaign 2025.
More than 1500 students, scholars, and faculty members of various University departments and around 120 GCTF-JU volunteers participated in the drive.
The Campaign was inaugurated by Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice-Chancellor, in presence of faculty In-charges of GCTF-JU and volunteers from various departments of the University.
He interacted with the students and encouraged them to practice cleanliness both at homes and the campus. He further emphasized that cleanliness activities should not be confined to a single day but continued consistently to maintain a clean and healthy campus.
“Student participation in campus cleanliness drives promotes a sense of responsibility, encourages collaborative engagement, and instils a lifelong commitment to a healthy environment,” he added.
The Vice Chancellor enthusiastically participated in the campaign, contributing to waste collection across the campus.
Prof. Deepika Slathia, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, and Convener, GCTF-JU, highlighted the importance of Swachhata hi Sewa Campaign 2025, which aims to promote collective participation in sanitation and sustainable waste management through environmental awareness drives and campaigns.
“Engaging students in campus cleanups encourages them to understand and practice sustainable waste management and adopt eco-friendly practices”, she said while addressing the participants.
Prof Salathia expressed her gratitude to each department of the university for their active participation in the event.
As part of the initiative, students and scholars from all the teaching departments of the university, under the supervision of their respective teacher's In-Charge, collected waste from their departments and the nearby areas and stored it in garbage bags.
Over 210 garbage bags were collected in total from the University Campus. The Health and Sanitation Wing of the University of Jammu subsequently managed and disposed off the collected waste.
The GCTF-JU volunteers were divided into groups to ensure smooth execution of the drive. They also interacted with visitors and canteen owners to raise awareness about proper waste segregation and disposal.
Canteen owners were encouraged to install dustbins at accessible locations and ensure regular cleaning, while students reflected on sustainable methods of waste management through hands-on participation.
Later, committee comprising of Prof Umesh Rai, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Prakash Antahal, Dean Students Welfare, Prof. Pankaj Srivastava, Director, CDOE, Prof. Piyush Malaviya, Convener, Arboriculture and Landscaping Unit, Prof. Deepika Slathia, Convener, GCTF-JU and Dr. Bharat Bhushan, CMO, Health Centre University of Jammu visited various departments to interact with the participants and appreciated their efforts in maintaining departmental cleanliness.
At the end, Prof. Prakash Antahal, Dean Students Welfare, congratulated all the collaborators including Heads of departments, Teachers In-charge, volunteers, research scholars, students, and faculty members for their contribution to this noble cause. He lauded the efforts of the organizers and urged that such events should become a regular feature at the University of Jammu.
The campaign highlighted the important role of collective action in building a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally conscious campus, aligning with the spirit of Swachhata hi Sewa Campaign 2025.
