JU organizes Interactive Parenting Program on "Parenting for a Healthier Today and Tomorrow"
Jammu May 05: The Department of Home Science, University of Jammu, successfully organized an interactive Parent Empowerment Program for the parents of children enrolled at Surabhi Nursery School and Day Care Centre. The program aimed to provide parents with practical insights, promote mindful parenting, enhance awareness of child health and development, and strengthen the parent–educator partnership. It focused on empowering parents with knowledge and strategies essential for nurturing healthier families and well-rounded children.
The event began with a warm welcome address by the Head of the Department of Home Science, Prof. Sarika Manhas, who spoke about the critical role of mindful parenting in shaping children’s emotional, physical, and social development. She emphasized that parents are the first role models for their children and that their influence plays a lasting role in how children view themselves and the world around them. The program was held under the guidance and supervision of Prof. Rajni Dhingra, a distinguished academic and expert in the field of Child Development.
The central discussions of the day focused on enhancing parent–child communication, setting healthy boundaries with regard to screen time, promoting nutritious eating habits, and ensuring proper dental hygiene from an early age. These themes were thoughtfully chosen to reflect the realities of modern parenting and to encourage practices that support the holistic well-being of young children.
The program featured insightful sessions by expert resource persons. Sh. Guneet Singh, Parenting Coach, delivered an engaging talk on positive parenting and the importance of emotional connection. Dr. Bharat Bhushan, Chief Medical Officer at the University Health Centre, shared valuable advice on preventive healthcare and maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Dr. Gautam Sharma, Dental Officer at the University of Jammu, provided useful tips on oral hygiene and its impact on overall health in children.
Adding further value to the event was the gracious presence of senior faculty members of the department. The staff of Surabhi Nursery School also participated enthusiastically, strengthening the collaborative bond between educators and families. Faculty members from other departments, including Dr. Chinmoye Sharma, Dr. Sarabjeet Kour, and Dr. Priyanka Arya, were also present on the occasion.
A special highlight of the program was a creative and informative display presented by second semester students, under the guidance of Dr. Kanika Gupta. The students showcased cooked tiffin ideas that were healthy, nutritious, and child-friendly, offering parents practical inspiration for everyday meal planning. This exhibit was well-received and appreciated for its creativity, relevance, and practical value.
The Parent Empowerment Program is a signature annual event of the Department of Home Science, reflecting its continued commitment to extending learning beyond the classroom and into the home environment.
