The University Science Instrumentation Centre (USIC), University of Jammu, has been consistently striving to evolve into a Centre of Excellence by strengthening its technical capabilities and expanding its service outreach. USIC has demonstrated commendable performance in providing in-house fabrication and repair facilities for scientific instruments and computer systems. These support services have resulted in significant savings of time and financial resources for various University departments by minimizing dependence on external agencies and reducing instrument downtime.

Earlier, USIC was the beneficiary of a UGC-sponsored scheme on Instrument Maintenance Facility, sanctioned for a period of five years. Under this initiative, approximately 1,600 computer systems, along with their peripheral devices, were repaired in-house. This not only led to substantial cost savings for the University but also ensured the timely restoration of essential academic and administrative infrastructure. In addition, USIC provided technical assistance in the verification and quality assessment of newly procured computer systems and peripherals. Obsolete, damaged, or economically irreparable systems were systematically identified, declared unserviceable, and disposed of by the concerned departments following due procedures.

USIC has also played a pivotal role in the scientific asset management of the University by facilitating the disposal of e-waste and unserviceable scientific equipment through forward auctions conducted on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal, ensuring transparency, compliance, and environmental responsibility.

USIC previously primarily functioned as a technical support unit, offering fabrication and repair services not only to university departments but also to external organizations such as Government Colleges and the J&K Forensic Science Laboratory. Further USIC employee (electrical) also had the in-house fabrication of electrical stabilizers ranging from 0.5 to 5 KVA to safeguard laboratory equipment in USIC.

At present, USIC has significantly expanded its mandate and operational scope. It is now actively engaged in advanced technical and analytical activities through its major functional sections, namely Glass Blowing, Electrical, Refrigeration, and Electronics & Analytical Services. These sections collectively provide integrated, high-end technical support backed by modern scientific instrumentation. With the installation and planned expansion of advanced microscopy systems, analytical and biomedical equipment, molecular biology facilities, precision cold storage infrastructure for biological samples, and allied research support systems, USIC envisions its transformation into a centralized hub for advanced research, innovation, and capacity building.

This strategic transition marks the evolution of USIC from a predominantly service-oriented facility into a modern, technology-driven centre that actively supports cutting-edge teaching, interdisciplinary research, and scientific excellence at the University of Jammu.
