The department recently organized a vibrant and engaging fresher party to warmly welcome the new batch of students (M.Sc. Zoology, Batch 2024-2026). The fresher party for the juniors turned out to be a grand success, with senior students warmly welcoming their juniors and inviting the faculty members to join in the celebration. The event showcased a variety of performances, including energetic dances, melodious songs, and entertaining skits, performed by both juniors and seniors, creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere. The highlight of the event was the presence of the Head of Department (HOD), who praised the efforts and coordination of the senior students for organizing such a memorable event. The HOD, in her speech, emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy and inclusive environment in the department, where respect, collaboration, and mutual support are key values. The HOD also took the opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of the faculty, recognizing that their guidance plays a pivotal role in shaping the academic and personal growth of the students. Additionally, the HOD highlighted the often-overlooked contributions of non-teaching staff, mentioning that they are the backbone of the department, ensuring its smooth functioning and success. The event concluded with a lunch, where students, faculty, and non-teaching staff gathered to share a meal, further strengthening the bond within the department and fostering a sense of community and togetherness.

Department of Zoology, University of Jammu organised a lectures for PG students and research scholars. At the outset, Prof Seema Langer, Head of the Department of Zoology at the University of Jammu, welcomed Dr. Vinod Kumar during a significant academic event. Faculty members and students gathered to attend and witness Dr. Kumar's lecture.
The primary aim of the event was to invite the resource person i.e. Dr. Vinod Kumar to speak on key topics in endocrinology, focusing on hormones and their impact on stress management. In addition, we sought Dr. Kumar’s guidance for our PhD scholars regarding research proposal writing and navigating the complexities of modern scientific research.
The session with Dr. Vinod Kumar proved to be highly enlightening for both postgraduate students and PhD scholars. His vast expertise provided attendees with a deeper understanding of endocrinology, stress management, and scientific research methodologies. Dr. Kumar’s guidance on research proposals was particularly beneficial for scholars seeking to advance their academic careers.

On Teachers' Day, Professor (Dr) Seema Langer shared her thoughts about the significance of the day. Highlighting the dedication and contributions of educators, she mentioned that teachers inspire, guide, and nurture students to become responsible citizens. The event featured various performances, including dance, music, and drama, as a tribute to their teachers. One of the highlights of the celebration was a fun-filled musical chair game, specially arranged for the faculty members. This playful activity added a light-hearted touch to the event, allowing teachers to relax and enjoy a break from their usual academic roles. The celebration at the Department of Zoology included heartfelt acknowledgments for the faculty's efforts in mentoring students and contributing to academic excellence.

The flag hoisting event was organized by the Department of Zoology to honor our national heritage and foster a sense of patriotism among students and faculty. Faculty members, students, and staff gathered for the flag hoisting. The ceremony commenced with the hoisting of the national flag by Prof. Seema Langer (HOD, Zoology). The ceremony was accompanied by the singing of the national anthem performed by the students and faculty members. Following the main program, sweets were distributed to all attendees as a gesture of celebration.

The Department of Zoology organized an induction programme on August 1, 2024, in the seminar hall. The aim of this programme was to welcome the newly enrolled M.Sc. students in the department and introduce them with the available resources and the Faculty. On this occasion, Prof. Seema Langer, Head of the Department, emphasized the importance of academic rigour, research opportunities, and the overall development of students. Her speeches typically highlight the curriculum structure, the available resources, and the support systems in place to help students succeed in their postgraduate studies. These induction programmes are designed to help new students feel welcome and motivated as they embark on their academic journeys. They also serve to inspire students by showcasing the achievements of the university's alumni and the potential career paths available to graduates.
During the induction programme, one of the alumni (Aditi Singhal, M.Sc. Zoology, Batch 2019-2021), a gold medalist and JKAS qualifier, interacted with our new students and shared her experiences regarding academics and narrated the struggle behind her success story. Her presence encouraged and motivated the students who are at the beginning of their journey. The department proudly honored for her success and wished her good luck ahead. The programme was also attended by all the faculty members, research scholars and students.

Observance of Silence on 30th January 2024 (Martyr’s Day) in the memory of those who sacrificed their lives during struggle for India’s Freedom by Department of Zoology.
On Martyr’s Day Department of Zoology, University of Jammu observed silence for two minutes at 11:00 am to pay homage and to remember the sacrifices of our freedom fighters. In this connection, a documentary entitled “Azadi-A tribute to India’s Great Freedom Fighters” was also showcased in the seminar hall of Department of Zoology and was seen by students, Research Scholars, non teaching and teaching Faculty members of the department generating a wave of patriotism in the Hall.
Department of Zoology hosted one day workshop on “Know Your Genes” on 23rd Jan. 2024.
It was organized by Science Club, Utsaah, University of Jammu. This workshop cum awareness program for the youth and participants. The invited speaker Dr Sawarkar Sharma, Director, Centre for Molecular Biology spoke about the human gene and its genetic make-up. He elaborated about the genes what makes what we are. With his longstanding research work in the field of genetics he shared in-depth insights about life-style diseases for awareness among the audience. He further discussed about personalized medicine and informed about designer babies.
The event was well perceived by scholars, students from various departments and students of DYD. The participants enthusiastically took part in Seminar Interaction with eminent guest speaker and dignitaries present, followed by laboratory visit where they were demonstrated about the isolation of DNA, gel electrophoresis and visualization techniques used for DNA or genes. They also participated in gene model making competition in teams of students.
Department of Zoology organized Educational tour to Bangalore, Mysore and Coorg.
An educational tour as a part of academic curriculum was organized by department of Zoology University of Jammu w.e.f. 14th to 24th of January 2024 for MSc III Sem students. A total of 25 students under the guidance of Dr Ripu Daman Parihar, teacher incharge visited many places of scientific and academic importance in southern India. The aim of this tour was to explore the Biodiversity, learn about aquatic flora and fauna of the region. The students visited many places like Zoo, Bird Sanctuary, Science Musems, dams, waterfalls etc. Besides this, they explored the rich heritage of Mysore, Karnataka where they visited Tipu Palace, Mysore Palace, Vrindaban Gardens, IScon Temple and the Great Buddhist Golden temple in Coorg. The tour was successfully conducted and the students were very happy because most of them got this opportunity to visit South India first time in their life and are expected to submit report of the same.

On 30th November,2023, as an outreach activity under lab to land initiative department of Zoology, University of Jammu organized one day awareness programme on Honey Bee farming in collaboration with Khadi and Village industries commission, Govt. of India at village Gowar, panchyat Sarwal, Tehsil Pargwal, Jammu.The objective was to spread awareness among farmers of border area about scope and benefits of bee farming. The programme was executed by coordination between Yashpal Singh, Deputy Director ,KVIC, Govt. of India, H.S.Ghurdaura, executive bee keeper, Dr. Ripu Daman Parihar, Assistant Professor, Zoology, University of Jammu along Sh. Bopinder Singh, Sarpanch, Parduman Singh ,panch Sarwal panchayat. More than 60 farmers including females were given the knowledge and they enthusiastically accepted the option of honey bee farming for self employment. They were also informed about various subsidy schemes of government to take up this as a start up.

Butterflies play an important role in ecosystem. The students grabbed this opportunity and learnt many things related to this beautiful creature. The students showed keen interest in the festival and learnt about their puddling behaviour, egg laying and various developmental stages. All the students were very happy , enthusiastic and determined to play their role actively for protecting beautiful nature around us.

Department of Zoology. University of Jammu, celebrated world honey bee day and organized a lecture and hands on training on the topic: Bee engaged in pollinator-friendly agricultural production.The lecture was delivered by an eminent worker and researcher in this field Dr.Devinder Sharma, Associate Professor, Head AICRP honeybee and pollinators division of Entomology, SKUAST- Jammu. For the function formal floral welcome to the guest was given by Dr.Arti Sharma of Zoology Department. Speaker during his lecture gave a detailed insite into beekeeping, specially economic benefits of this field as an entrepreneur option. He also motivated students to be messengers in society and tell people of the benefits of honey and honeybee keeping. Hands on demonstration of beekeeping was also given in the zoological park of the university , where bee boxes have been installed. The program ended with a vote of thanks to the speaker and participants.
Entrepreneurship Skill Enhancement workshop was organized by the Department of Zoology, University of Jammu
Department of Zoology University of Jammu in an attempt to inculcate entrepreneurship skills among students organizes one day workshop on “Solid Waste management: An ecofriendly preposition” on 25th of April 2023. Prof. S S Hundal, former Head, Department of Zoology, PAU Ludhiana was the resource person for the workshop. Prof. Hundal is an eminent scientist and expert in the filed of vermicompost. He elaborated and disseminated the practice and procedure of vermicompost set up as a prominent means of solid waste management and as a potential entrepreneurial venture. He also motivated the students to realize the economic benefits of vermicompost set up. The workshop was attended by the students and research scholar of the zoology department.
Department of Zoology organised Induction programme for Freshers 15 Dec 2022
Student’s Induction Programme for newly admitted students in first semester of M.Sc Zoology was organised by the department of Zoology, University of Jammu. The event took place in the seminar hall of the department and was attended by the M.Sc 1st Semester students, parents of the students, teaching and non teaching faculty of the department. Mrs. Anuradha thakur (JKAS), BDO, Hirangar, an alumna of Department of Zoology was special guest for the occassion. She shared her experiences with the students and guided them for career perspectives. She also emphasised on need of hard work for pursuing career goals. Mrs. Thakur expressed her gratitude to the department of zoology for shaping her future and to help her excelling in life. Words and story of success attributed to department of zoology by Mrs. Thakur impressed students to the extent that few of the newly admitted students stood up and expressed their happiness to be a part of this prestigious department. Earlier, at start of the event, Prof. Seema Langer HOD, Zoology and Dean, Life sciences welcomed all the newly admmitted students to the department of Zoology and gave an elaborated overview of the course currilculum, programme offered, thrust research areas and achivements of the department. The programme concluded with the vot of thanks by Dr. Sarbjeet Kour, Assistant Professer, Department of Zoology.
