Journalism Department Organises Valedictory Function of 10-Day Summer Internship Programme in Collaboration with Translation Club

Jammu, June 12: The Department of Journalism and Media Studies, University of Jammu, organised the valedictory function of its 10-day Summer Internship Programme in collaboration with the Translation Club under the aegis of Utsaah, the Club Consortium, University of Jammu around the theme "Nasha Mukt Bharat. The internship programme was conceived in accordance with the vision of Vice Chancellor, Prof. Umesh Rai and inspired by his guiding philosophy, of "Dissolving Boundaries, Evolving Education."
Dr. Devansh Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation, was the Chief Guest on the occasion, while senior journalist Shamsher Singh Charak and Prof. Meena Sharma, Chairperson, Utsaah Club Consortium, were the Special Guests.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Devansh Yadav called upon the youth to adopt a healthy lifestyle, stay away from drugs, and channel their energies into productive and creative pursuits. He encouraged students to utilise digital platforms innovatively while adhering to ethical values and professional standards.
Appreciating the department's efforts, he observed that such internship programmes play a significant role in providing practical exposure and preparing students to meet the challenges of the rapidly evolving media landscape.
Speaking on the occasion, Shamsher Singh Charak highlighted the crucial role of media in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting informed public discourse. He urged aspiring journalists to remain committed to truth, objectivity, credibility, and public service while discharging their professional responsibilities.
Earlier, welcoming the guests and participants, Prof. Meena Sharma congratulated the students on successfully completing the internship programme. She lauded the Department of Journalism and Media Studies for effectively bridging the gap between classroom learning and industry requirements. Stressing the importance of skill development and experiential learning in higher education, she also highlighted the diverse activities undertaken by the Translation Club and appreciated the coordinators and faculty members for their dedicated efforts in making the programme a success.
Prof. Dushyant Kumar Rai, Head, Department of Journalism and Media Studies stated that such internship initiatives provide students with valuable opportunities to learn beyond the classroom, interact with academic and industry experts, and acquire practical skills required in today's dynamic media environment. He reiterated the Department's commitment to organising more such academic and professional development programmes in the future. He later on delivered the formal vote of thanks.
Prof. Garima Gupta, Coordinator, Translation Club and Head, Department of Foreign Languages, highlighted the role of translation in promoting inclusivity, cultural understanding, and national integration in the multilingual context of Jammu.
Referring to the "Nasha Mukt Bharat" campaign, she emphasized that communication in native languages is essential for effectively reaching people in far-flung and rural areas and such translation initiatives would contribute to multilingual awareness and serve as a model for similar campaigns across the country.
Presenting the detailed report of the internship programme, Dr. Pardeep Singh Bali, faculty, Department of Journalism and Media Studies, informed that the ten-day internship, organised in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, provided hands-on training to more than 175 student interns from PSPS Government Women College, Gandhi Nagar, and GGM Science College.
Under the banner of the Translation Club, the anti-drug pledge was translated and recited in multiple languages, including Gojri, Hindi, Dogri, English, and Urdu, reflecting the region's rich linguistic diversity and reinforcing the collective resolve towards building a drug-free society
Moreover, a performance by Nitika Agarwal and her team of students from Jammu University, on the theme “Drug-Deaddiction” was also presented in the form of intersemiotic translation as dance-drama.
The proceedings of the event were conducted by Dr. Kumerjit Chajgotra, Assistant Professor, Department of Journalism and Media Studies. Student interns also shared their experiences and acknowledged that this 10-day summer internship has transformed their perspectives.
Among those present on the occasion were Prof. Seema Langar, Head, Department of Zoology; Prof. Pankaj Kumar; Dr. Sarabjeet Kour; and Dr. Sash Pal, who had actively collaborated in the internship programme through science communication initiatives. Dr. Ramiyan Bhardwaj was also present during the function.
