JU Organised seven-Days Self-Defence Training Programme

Jammu, 25 th November, 2025: The Centre for Women’s Studies, in
collaboration with Students for Sewa, successfully organized a seven-days Self-
Defence Training Programme to commemorate the birth anniversary of Rani
Lakshmi Bai, an enduring symbol of courage and empowerment. The
programme commenced with an inspiring inaugural ceremony and concluded
with a dynamic valedictory session that highlighted the participants’ growth and
enthusiasm.
The programme was inaugurated on 19th November in a solemn and
inspiring ceremony graced by Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director, Centre for
Women’s Studies, attended as the Chief Guest of the inaugural function and
Prof. Shashi Manhas, Provost, Girls Hostel, was the Guest of Honour. Both
distinguished academicians emphasized the importance of equipping women
with practical self-defence techniques and fostering a culture of resilience and
preparedness.
Prof. Savita Nayyar, in her address highlighted the significance of such
initiatives in educational institutions, noting that self-defence is “not merely a
physical skill, but a vital component of self-confidence and independence.” She
also highlighted the importance of self-defence training for young women and
encouraged participants to cultivate confidence, resilience, and presence of
mind which are the qualities epitomised by Rani Lakshmi Bai.
Prof. Shashi Manhas, in her remarks, praised the initiative for creating safe
spaces for women to engage, learn, and strengthen their sense of agency.
The inaugural event also included an introduction to the training modules,
an interactive orientation with the trainers, and a motivational session focusing
on personal safety and situational awareness. During the seven days,
participants received hands-on training in techniques such as basic strikes,
escape tactics, situational responses, and mental preparedness. Professional
trainers from Gamma Academy guided the participants through practical
demonstrations, scenario-based activities, and confidence-building exercises.
The valedictory session celebrated the successful completion of the
programme. Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, in her
remarks appreciated the dedication of the students for these rigorous seven days
training and encouraged them for honing skills for practical learning. The chief
guest for the valedictory function was Prof. Suman Jamwal, Dean Social

Sciences and Head Department of History, who in her address commended the
participants for their enthusiastic involvement and praised the organisers for
their efforts in championing women’s empowerment through skill-based
initiatives. She highlighted and traced the inspiring history of Rani Lakshmi
Bai, recounting her fearless leadership during the 1857 uprising and her
unwavering commitment to justice and sovereignty. Prof. Jamwal noted that
beginning the self-defence programme on this symbolic date added profound
meaning to the initiative, aligning its purpose with the values embodied by the
iconic warrior queen. She congratulated and asserted that the successful
completion of the programme stands as a tribute to the fearless spirit of Rani
Lakshmi Bai and reflects the Centre’s ongoing dedication to fostering strength,
confidence, and self-reliance among women.
More than 60 girls participated in the training workshop and showcased
the techniques they had learned over the course. Certificates were distributed to
all the expert trainers and the trainees in recognition of their dedication and
active participation.
Faculty coordinators Dr. Saranjit Kaur and Dr. Disha Sharma, from the
Centre for Women’s Studies and representatives from Students for Sewa
appreciated the commitment of the participants and reiterated their dedication to
continuing such empowerment initiatives in the future.
