Jammu, August 23: The Department of Botany, University of Jammu, under the aegis of the Botanical Club, successfully organized a Two-day Hands-on Training-cum-Workshop on “Cyanobacteria: Culture Techniques & Applications” on 22–23 August 2025. The workshop aimed to impart hands-on training, enhance research skills and introduce participants to advanced techniques in cyanobacterial studies. The workshop featured five technical sessions conducted by the eminent expert and resource person, Dr. O.N. Tiwari, Principal Scientist, ICAR-IARI, New Delhi. Dr. Tiwari delivered three engaging lectures and conducted two immersive practical demonstrations, which greatly enriched the learning experience of the participants.
The theoretical sessions covered diverse aspects of algal significance, with a special focus on cyanobacteria. Topics included lipid profiling, nitrogenase activity, pH and electrical conductivity, natural pigments (chlorophyll-a, phycobiliproteins, carotenoids) and cellular compounds (such as ammonia excretions and total sugars). These sessions provided valuable insights into the functional and applied aspects of microalgae. In the practical sessions, Dr. Tiwari demonstrated techniques for media preparation, inoculation and culture preservation, emphasizing essential precautions and best practices for laboratory work on cyanobacteria. His expertise, clarity of explanation and interactive teaching style were widely appreciated.
The workshop witnessed active participation from 42 registered participants, including research scholars, postgraduate students of the Department of Botany, and participants from various departments of the University of Jammu and its affiliated colleges.
The event concluded with a valedictory function, graced by Prof. Yash Pal Sharma, Dean, Life Sciences, as the Chief Guest.
