Academic and Research Activities

A. Teaching
Centre offers two Open Choice Courses at post-graduate level, one each in 3rd and 4th semesters, to the student of various departments of the university. 

The courses are: 
PSSEO-301: Social Exclusion-Concepts, Approaches & Affirmative Action (in 3rd semester) 
PSSEO-401: Dalit Mobilization in Colonial and Postcolonial India (in 4th semester).

B. Research Project
Centre has been awarded a research project on “Seasonal Migration and Human Development: A Study of Bakerwals in Jammu and Kashmir”, with total grant of 8 Lakhs by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India. The project report will soon be submitted.

C. Extension Lectures organized by Centre

  1. First extension lecture was delivered by an eminent sociologist, Professor Paramjit Singh Judge, G.N.D.U., Amritsar on the conceptual framework of the Social Exclusion and Inclusive policy in January 2013.
  2. Second extension lecture was delivered by Dr. J. R. Thapa on Social exclusion and Mental Health problems in October, 2013.
  3. Third extension lecture was delivered by Dr. Mohita Bhatia on ‘Tracing the Origin and Expansion of the Concept of Social exclusion’ on March 19,2014

D. Public Talks organized by Centre

  1. Centre organized a public talk on “Vignettes from the East & North –East: Assuagement through Assertion” delivered by Prof. Loveleen Mohan, M.D. University, Rohtak, Haryana on 30 November, 2017.
  2. Centre organised a public talk on ‘Situating Chandals and Dooms in the Early Medieval Social Order of Kashmir’ by Prof.Shaym Narayan Lal, Department of History, University of Jammu on 13 March,2018.
  3. Centre organized a Public Talk on “Gujjars: Identity and Culture”, which was delivered by Dr. Javaid Rahi, Chief Editor in Gojri, J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages on 21 August,2018.
  4. Centre organized a Public Talk on “Dalit Womens’ Life Narratives as an Agency for Social Change”, which was delivered by Dr. Parveen Kumari, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Central University of Jammu on 27th November, 2019.

E. National Seminars organised by Centre

  1. Centre organized its first National Seminar on ‘The Concept of Social Exclusion and Inclusion in Indian History’ on March 26-28, 2014.
  2. Centre organized its second National Seminar on May 25-26, 2018 on theme ‘Social Exclusion and Marginal Communities: Challenges of Deprivation and Discrimination in Northern India’. 
  3. Centre organized its third National Seminar on January 17-18, 2020 on theme ‘Social Exclusion and Challenges of Inclusion in India: Need for Paradigm Shift’. 

F.  Workshops organized by Centre

  1. Centre in collaboration with National Service Scheme (NSS), Campus Units, University of Jammu organized a one-day workshop on the theme “Social Positioning of Transgender: Issues and Challenges”, to make inclusion a priority with transgender people on November 30, 2018.
  2. Centre organised one-day workshop on “Specially-Abled Persons: Issues and Challenges” on August 27, 2019.

G. Book Publication by Centre

  1. Monograph : Centre has published a monograph “Positioning Marginalised Communities in J&K”, an attempt to highlight major perspectives of marginalized communities in India with special reference in J&K. The monograph is structured into four major sections. The present monograph is an attempt to visualize the positioning and actual condition of Marginalized Castes in Jammu.  
  2. Lecture Series: Centre has published lecture series vol:1-4 consists of the lectures delivered by the eminent scholars time to time.
  3. Edited volume: Centre has published an edited volume titled ‘Social Exclusion and Marginal Communities: Challenges of Deprivation and Discrimination’ in the year 2020, published by AUTHORS PRESS, New Delhi, India.
