JU Inaugurates Seven-Day National Workshop on Computational Sanskrit
JAMMU, July 17, 2026: The Department of Sanskrit, University of Jammu, today inaugurated a Seven-Day National Workshop on “Computational Sanskrit – Basic Level” through an online virtual platform. The workshop is being organised from July 17 to July 24, 2026, with the objective of equipping research scholars, students, and teachers with contemporary knowledge and skills by integrating the Sanskrit language with modern computational technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The session was presided over by Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu, who was also the Chief Guest. Prof. Satish Kapoor, Director, Central Sanskrit University, Kot Bhalwal, was the Guest of Honour while Prof. Subhash Chandra, Department of Sanskrit, University of Delhi, attended as the Keynote Speaker.
The programme began with a Vedic Invocation and Saraswati Vandana.
In his presidential address, Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu and Chief Guest, emphasized that Computational Sanskrit plays a significant role in establishing India's knowledge tradition at the global level. Appreciating the University's efforts in organising such innovative academic programmes, he encouraged all participants to make the best possible use of this learning opportunity.
Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Subhash Chandra elaborated on the fundamental concepts of Computational Sanskrit, its present status, and future prospects. He highlighted the scientific nature of the Sanskrit language and its growing relevance in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP).
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Satish Kapoor stressed the importance of preserving, promoting, and disseminating Sanskrit through modern technological platforms. He observed that computational approaches are indispensable for making Sanskrit more accessible to the younger generation in the digital era.
Earlier, Prof. Ram Bahadur Shukla, Head, Department of Sanskrit and Convener of the Workshop, welcomed the distinguished guests and participants. He outlined the workshop's objectives, structure, and academic significance, emphasizing the immense scope for research and training in Computational Sanskrit. He remarked that such initiatives play a vital role in connecting India's knowledge tradition with modern technological advancements.
The second academic session, held after the inaugural programme, featured a lecture by Prof. Pavnesh Abrol, Department of Computer Science and IT, University of Jammu, on “Computational Sanskrit and Artificial Intelligence: Empowering Indian Knowledge System.” He discussed the relevance of Sanskrit in integrating Artificial Intelligence with the Indian Knowledge System and highlighted its potential in contemporary technological research.
During the afternoon session, Prof. Subhash Chandra delivered a detailed lecture on “Introduction to Sanskrit Computational Linguistics: Research Trends and Future Opportunities.” He discussed emerging research trends in Computational Linguistics, career and research opportunities, and the development of Sanskrit-based digital resources.
The programme concluded with an interactive feedback session, during which participants shared their suggestions and observations regarding the workshop.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Harish Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Sanskrit, University of Jammu, and Coordinator of the Workshop.
The seven-day national workshop will continue over the coming days with expert lectures, practical training sessions, and interactive discussions covering various dimensions of Computational Sanskrit, thereby enriching participants with both theoretical insights and hands-on research-oriented learning.
