Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu Awareness Workshop for Community Women at Village Trilokpur, Jammu

 

To celebrate the International Women’s Day, the Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu successfully conducted anawareness workshop for Community women today on 25th February, 2026 atVillage Trilokpur, Jammu with the aim of strengthening gender awareness and enhancing the capacity of women.

The session was conducted by Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, who wasthe Resource Person for the workshop. Prof. Nayyar,in her lecture emphasized on the transformative power of education. She explained that education is the foundation of empowerment, help women to gain confidence, make informed decisions, and contribute meaningfully to their families and society at large. She encouraged women to have both formal and informal learning opportunities.Highlighting the importance of employment skills, she stated that skill development enables women to become financially independent and self-reliant. She encouraged participants to explore government and non-government training programs that enhance employability and small business opportunities.

Further she also talked about Child Marriage, evil of Dowry, Female Foeticide and violence which is happening in various forms in the family and society. She stressed that silence supports injustice, while awareness and collective action bring change. She encouraged women to speak up against domestic violence, workplace harassment, and other forms of discrimination. She also explained about legal rights, constitutional provisions, laws and other support systems available to protect women.

Large number of women from three different villages- Trilokpur, Nandini and Seora, participated in the programme. The workshop focused on empowering them with knowledge and skills to identify gender-based discrimination, support women and children in distress, and promote gender-equitable practices at the grassroots level. The participants very enthusiastically participated and shared their experiences and observations as well.

The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Saranjit Kaur, Faculty, Centre for Women’s Studies and Ms Santosh and Ms. Geeta, from Lal Ded Women Welfare Society. The formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Disha Sharma, Faculty, Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu.
