To commemorate 75 years of Independence, the Office of the Programme Coordinator NSS and National Service Scheme (NSS), Campus Units, University of Jammu, Jammu today successfully concluded “Mere Matti Mera Desh” campaign launched by the Government of India as a continuation for celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.The Abhiyan was held from 19th Aug to 30th Aug, 2023 .A series of events to honour the 75 years of India’s Independence, were organized which included pledge taking and  plantation drive. Holding soil in hands the NSS Volunteers took  the Panch Pram Pledge and bowed down to the soil.

One of the key activities of the campaign was the development of an Amrit Vatika (Amrit Garden) in the campus by planting 75 saplings of indigenous species. About 75 samplings of various indigenous varieties of flowers, fruits and other plants were planted in different areas of the campus which included Amla, Bel, Hibiscus, Neem, Indian Champa, Plumeria Champa, Golden Trumpet, Lemon, Gulmohar, Silver Oak etc. The areas were theses were planted are near Dhanvantri Library, Shivji Temple, and General Zorawar Singh Auditorium. “Amrit Vatika” was developed in the backyard of the Dhanwantri Library. The samplings were brought from Social Forestry Department Nursery, Sidhra free of cost under Mere Matti Mera Desh Abhiyan.

 The event was conducted under the mentorship of Prof. Umesh  Rai, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor & Chairman NSS, University of Jammu, Jammu who appreciated all for promoting the message of patriotism and national integration.  He also who lauded the efforts of all the volunteers for the successful conduct of the event and said that such events create awareness in motivating students to adopt practices towards maintaining clean and green surroundings of the campus. The event was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Savita Nayyar, Convenor NSS, Campus Units, and Dr. Hema Gandotra, NSS   Programme Coordinator, University of Jammu, Jammu who congratulated all the volunteers for the successful conduct of the event. The NSS Programme Officers of University of Jammu, Dr.Shallu Sehgal, Dr. Subash, Dr. Amit Sharma, Dr.Monika Bhardwaj, Dr.Mandeep Nathyal and Dr.Rajbeer Singh also joined in the campaign. More than 50 NSS Volunteers Students and Research Scholars participated in the event. All the NSS Volunteers participated in the event with zeal and enthusiasm. The event was successful with the joint efforts and cooperation of Health Centre Employees of University of Jammu and services of Landscaping and Arboriculture Department, University of Jammu, Jammu.

The event was over all coordinated by Dr. Meghna Dhar, NSS Programme Officer, NSS Campus Unit-II, University of Jammu, Jammu. She said that the volunteers can play a great role in creating awareness among the people from all walks of life to protect the environment of the Nation in an effective manner for present as well as future generations to come.
