Centre for Women’s Studies culminates the Gender Sensitisation Workshop Series

The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu culminated  the Gender Sensitization Workshop Series today after the conduct of Eighth workshop for the students of Chemistry, Botany and Statistics, University of Jammu. Dr. Swati Dyahadroy, Faculty, Krantijyoti Savtribai Phule Women’s Studies Centre, Savtribai Phule Pune University was the resource person.  The Resource person was introduced by the Director of the centre, Prof. Vishav Raksha, who also welcomed the Resource person and the participants. She elaborated the motive behind the conduct of Gender Sensitization Workshop Series for the students and scholars of the University of Jammu.

Dr. Swati Dyahadroy, key speaker for the workshop explained the concepts of construction of Gender and Gender role. She also explained how stereotypical gestures and roles which are deeply imbibed in our minds are manifested in our day to day behavior. She also shared personal experience with examples to clarify the gender inequality prevalent in the society.

Prof. Veenu Koul, Head, Department of Botany, and Prof. Kamal K Kapoor, Head, Department of Chemistry, University of Jammu spoke about the dire need for gender sensitization and complimented and applauded the efforts of the Centre for taking such initiatives to sensitize the students of the Sciences as well. 

More than 100 participants comprising of students and faculty members from  departments  of Chemistry, Botany and Statistics  and from outside the University attended the workshop. The participants raised many queries on issues like Gender equality; Gendered spaces and stereotypical roles in the interaction that followed.

The late afternoon Valedictory Session was chaired by Prof. Manoj.K.Dhar, Honourable Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu. In this session Prof Vishav Raksha, Director, CWS  presented the brief report of the Eight workshops organized for scholars and students under the series.  In his valedictory remarks he congratulated the Centre for taking initiative to conduct such types of workshops. He also said that Gender Sensitization is very important because we grow in a society wherein every individual irrespective of gender should be provided with equal opportunities and facilities. The women who are the sufferer, most of the time are not lesser in any aspect thus should be treated as equals. He also stressed on the need for sensitizing the teachers, officers and other administrative staff of the University and outside the University for Colleges as well. He also suggested that feedback should also be taken from students and teachers though goggle forms which will help the Centre to analyze the achievements of such workshops and will also suggest further scope for improvement.

The students from the various departments also gave feedback on these workshops attended by them. The valedictory session was attended by various Heads of the Departments who collaborated with Centre for these workshops which included Prof Arti Bakhshi, Prof Seema Langar, Prof Kamal K Kapoor, Prof Sucheta Pathania, Prof Anuradha Sharma, Prof B K Bajaj,Prof Samridhi Arora, Prof Mohd Reyaz, Dr Daud Iqbal Baba and other faculty members as well. The different Resource persons also attended the session.

The proceedings of the workshop were conducted by Dr. Saranjit Kaur, faculty Centre for Women’s Studies who also presented the formal vote of thanks. The digital and graphic modalities were supported by Mr Sumeet Sharma and Ms Poonam Sharma.
