About Hostels:-

University of Jammu has set up five hostels, out of which three are for boys and two for girls. Almost all the hostels are situated in the campus and within walkable distance from teaching departments/Central Library/Administration Block/Bank/Post Office/P.C.O./Dispensary/Cafeteria etc.

The Hostels are neat, clean and possess all kinds of amenities for making the living of boarders recreational and enjoyable. The room of each hostel is well ventilated and airy. Few rooms in each hostel have single seated capacity and majority is double seated. Each hostel has a very big lush green sprawling lawn in front and backyard of the hostel. Each hostel has telephone facility, sports facility (T.T./Badminton/Chess etc) drinking water fitted with acquaguard, refrigerators, water coolers, television, modern cooking gas plant, geysers fitted, economical and affordable mess charges. Inverters are fitted for acting as standby light arrangement in the absence of power, good reading rooms with latest career and information promoting magazines, local/national papers subscribed, well furnished guest room and desired first aid is available in each Hostel.

The Doctor resides on the Campus and is available on call. The transport facility is available in each hostel for taking the students to the Hospital, if need be. The supporting staff is made available to each hostel. The day to day activities of the hostel are run by different committees of the Boarders. The University has set up kiosks near each hostel having the facility of PCO, Fax and Stationery items. The University/Hostels have matador/Mini-Bus facility at a stones throw distance from each hostel for visiting any part of the city. The Bus Stand, Railway Station and Airport are connected with public transport from each hostel of the University.

A rich culture is exhibited by the boarders of all the hostels. The boarders are involved in exchanging their culture by organizing important festivals of all religions. The boarders belonging to different parts of the country live in harmony with each other.

The Girls Hostels are known to have a distinct features of girls living in a well disciplined manner. The time limit is enforced for leaving the hostel and reporting back to the premises of the hostel. Attendance is taken on every day in the evening at the prescribed time and every boarder is required to be present prior to that. The Girls boarders are not allowed to leave the hostel thereafter. A strict vigil is kept on the entry and departure at the gate. No unauthorized person is ever allowed to enter into the hostel.

The affairs of the hostel are managed by a team of competent, dedicated, committed and mature Wardens who are always at the beck and call of the bonafide boarders round the clock. They render personal, social and economic guidance to all the boarders as and when required. All the boarders live in a very friendly, cosy and in an homely life atmosphere.

The Provost is available to the Boarders at all times for redressing the grievances of any kind relating to their stay in the hostel. The Vice-Chancellor too evinces keen interest in ensuring that the living of the boarders on the campus should be secure, safe and academic oriented.

All hostels are under the overall supervision of Provost. An independent office of the Provost has been set up to coordinate the working of all the hostels. All issues relating to the smooth working of the hostels are supervised by the Provost. The Provost coordinates with all the Wardens and renders guidance on all day to day issues of the hostel. All the boarders live in a very friendly and home like atmosphere. 

General Information and Regulations relating to Residence of Students in Hostel 

A)   General Information :-

1.    The University maintains hostels for men and women students. The number of boarders that the hostel can accommodate is as under:-

2.    Each room in the hostels is fitted with a ceiling electric fan and each boarder is provided a cot, a table and a chair for use in the hostels.

3.    The TV/Common room remains open during such hours as are notified from time to time by the Warden of the Hostel.

4.    In order to keep the expenses reasonably low, the hostel messes are run by the boarders on a co-operative basis or on a contract basis. The University provides Cooks/Ward Boys/ Maid Servants and utensils from its grant. The running of mess will be the responsibility of the mess committee appointed by the Warden.

5.    The schedule of hostel dues and securities payable by each boarder at the time of admission is as under :-

There are two Health Centres one in the University Old Campus and other in the University New Campus.

Note : 

The hostels remain closed during summer vacations. The boarders shall have to vacate the rooms during summer vacations for annual repairs of the rooms failing which a rent @ Rs. 50/- p.m. will be charged for this period. 

B)   Regulations :-

Discipline and Administration Committee for University Hostels :-

1.    There shall be a Discipline and Administration Committee for the University Hostels to consider and decide all matters relating to discipline and administration concerning the University Hostels. It is consist of the following members.

1.    All Deans of Faculties
2.    Dean Students Welfare
3.    Provost Hostels
4.    Wardens of the University Hostels
5.    Two teachers to be nominated by the Vice-Chancellor, every year for a period of one year.
6.    Resident Wardens of the Hostels

The senior-most Dean will preside over all meetings of the Committee. Provost Hostels will act as Convener of the Comittee.

Hostel Working Committee :-
There shall be a working committee for each University hostel to look after the day to day problems relating to its management. It will also function as an Advisory Committee to the University hostels. The Working Committee will consist of :-

1.    Provost Hostels-Chairman
2.    Warden of the hostel concerned
3.    Proctor of the hostel or, if there is no proctor, any boarder nominated by the Warden of the Hostel for this purpose.
4.    Resident Warden of the hostel

Norms to be Followed in Girls Hostel :-

The girl boarders who wish to visit the local guardian for meeting or going for some other work should be allowed to do so on making an entry on the boarder register by specifying the place to be visited, purpose of visit, time of departure and arrival on return. But the boarder has to be back before checking time notified for everyday. In case of any justified reason to visit beyond a day on a week, the permission of Resident Warden/Warden may be sought. 

The girls boarders desirous of staying for a night with local guardian/parents should seek prior permission of Resident Warden, if the absence from hostel is between 1-3 days. The boarder should present request from the local guardian in writing. The reason for absence from hostel should be specified and justified to seek prior permission (a day in advance). In case, the resident warden feels convinced (in consultation with Warden) that the stay of boarder is desired, the same may be permitted/allowed. The boarder may be allowed to visit once in a week only in ordinary circumstances for staying with local guardian.

The boarder desirous of staying beyond three days to a weeks' time, should seek prior permission of Warden duly recommended by the resident warden. The request for permitting the girl should however be made by local guardian in writing.

The boarder however desirous of staying with local guardian beyond one weeks' time for any specific reason, should seek permission of absence from Provost duly recommended by resident warden and warden. The warden should verify the authenticity of local guardian in making recommendations. The local guardian should make request and justify the reason for the absence of the boarder from the Hostel for such a long period. 

In case, any boarder wishes to go back to her home at the time when the class work is in session, the request from parents Ilocal guardianl Head of the department to the Warden is an essential requirement. 

No girl boarder will ordinarily be allowed to move out of the hostel without the prior permission of Warden/Resident Warden beyond checking time notified for every day i.e. by attendance time except vacations/holidays/gazetted holidays notified by the University. However, in case of said holidays too, written permission is essential. 

In case of scholars, the prior permission for staying away from the hostel for research purposes may be granted by the warden on recommendations of Guide and Head of the concerned department. 

The above stated conditions are in addition to the approved rules and regulations specified for the residence of the students in University Hostels. Violation in adherence to any of the stipulated points shall amount to disciplinary action as per statutory provisions contained for the residence of students in University.
